It all started, October 3rd, 2009, Saturday morning Hickory Ridge High School's Track & Field Team hosted a huge fundraising event in order to raise funds needed for equipment and to eventually rubberize their track.
An amount of $76,000.00 is needed to rubberize a track.
Asphalt is a very hard surface for athletes to run on. In fact it is in many medical journals that athletes that run on asphalt beginning in middle through high school 42.7% of those athletes end up with knee surgeries, knee problems, hip problems, back pain, ankle pain and always a given when running on hard surfaces shin splints. Oh, do we hate those shin splints.
Right now there are only two schools in cabarrus county that have rubberized tracks to run on. Mt. Pleasant and Kannapolis. Hickory Ridge, Central and JM Robinson will have to travel to these schools to compete. So Hickory Ridge among others will not have a home advantage. We out of respect for these athletes feel they deserve at least one home meet in front of their peers.
The kicker to this? We don't have enough money to get these athletes proper equipment to hold a home meet. That is why I have decided to come up with an annual fundraiser to build awareness of the needs this team and other schools have.
Plain and simple. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! Tell your friends, tell your neighborhood, share it with folks at work. Let's show these athletes how much we really care about them and want them to succeed in life!
GO BULLS!
